Diphenylamine

  • N-phenylbenzeneamine
  • Anilinobenzene
  • N,N-Diphenylamine
Formula (C6H5)2NH
Structure
Description Very pale tan-amber to brown crystalline solid, discolors in light, pleasant floral odor.
Uses Manufacture of dyes, stabilizing nitrocellulose explosives & celluloid, in analytical chemistry for detection of nitrates, chlorates and other oxidizing substances with which, in presence of sulfuric acid, it gives a deep-blue color, fungicide.

Hazards and Protection.
Storage Keep away from sources of ignition. Do not store in direct sunlight. Store in a tightly closed container. Keep from contact with oxidizing materials. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Store protected from light.
WHMIS D1B
Handling Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Do not ingest or inhale. Store protected from light.
Protection Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure.
Respirators Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Always use a NIOSH or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator when necessary.
Small spills/leaks Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Clean up spills immediately, using the appropriate protective equipment. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation.
Disposal code 9
Stability Stable under normal shipping and handling conditions.
Incompatibilities Oxidizing agents, strong acids, isocyanates, hexachloromelamine, organic anhydrides, aldehydes, trichloromelamine.
Decomposition Nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide.

Upper exp. limit, % 5.4
Lower exp. limit, % 0.7
Fire fighting Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. This material in sufficient quantity and reduced particle size is capable of creating a dust explosion. Extinguishing media: Water or foam may cause frothing. In case of fire, use carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder or appropriate foam.
Fire potential Nonflammable.
Hazards Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas.
Combustion products Toxic oxides of nitrogen may form in fire.

Exposure limit(s) TLV (as TWA): ppm; 10 mg/m3 (ACGIH 1995-1996). NIOSH REL: TWA 10 mg/m3
Poison_Class 3
Exposure effects Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. May cause reproductive and fetal effects. There is a danger of cumulative effects.
Ingestion May cause irritation of the digestive tract. May cause effects similar to those of acute inhalation.
Inhalation Inhalation of vapor may cause respiratory tract irritation. May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, convulsions, tachycardia, dyspnea, and death. May cause adverse central nervous system effects including headache, convulsions, and possible death. May cause bladder injury and hypertension.
Skin Causes skin irritation. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material.
   Eyes Causes eye irritation.

First aid

Ingestion Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Inhalation Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Skin Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. Destroy contaminated shoes.
Eyes Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
