Structure
DescriptionColorless liquid with a characteristic strong unpleasant odor, lachrymator.
UsesChemical intermediate for thioglycolates (eg, calcium thioglycolate), ingredient of depilatories, permanent hair wave solutions and biological media for microorganism growth, reagent for detection of iron and other metal ions, chelating agent.

Hazards and Protection.
Storage Keep away from heat and flame. Do not store near combustible materials. Store in a cool, dry place. Keep container closed when not in use. Keep away from metals. Corrosives area. Do not store in metal containers.

Exposure effects CNS depression, seizures, and paralysis were seen in animal experiments, but not in human exposures.
   IngestionHarmful if swallowed. Causes gastrointestinal tract burns. Mercaptans may cause nausea and headache. Exposure to high concentrations of mercaptans can produce unconsciousness with cyanosis, cold extremities and rapid pulse.
   InhalationMay cause severe irritation of the respiratory tract with sore throat, coughing, shortness of breath and delayed lung edema. Olfactory fatigue may occur. Exposure to high concentrations of mercaptans can produce unconsciousness with cyanosis, cold extremities and rapid pulse. Mercaptans may cause nausea and headache.
   SkinMay be fatal if absorbed through the skin. Causes skin burns. Strong irritant of the skin.

First aid
 
   IngestionDo NOT induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.
   InhalationGet medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. DO NOT use mouth-to-mouth respiration.
   Skin Get medical aid immediately. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. Destroy contaminated shoes.
   EyesGet medical aid immediately. Do NOT allow victim to rub or keep eyes closed. Extensive irrigation is required (at least 30 minutes).
