Hazards and Protection.
Storage Keep away from sources of ignition. Store in a cool, dry place. Store in a tightly closed container. Keep from contact with oxidizing materials.
WHMIS D2A
Handling Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid ingestion and inhalation.
Protection Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to minimize contact with skin.
Respirators Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Always use a NIOSH or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator when necessary.
Small spills/leaks Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Avoid generating dusty conditions.
Stability Stable under normal temperatures and pressures.
Incompatibilities May react vigorously or violently when mixed with strong oxidizing agents such as chlorates, bromates and nitrates, especially when heated. Incompatible with chlorinated paraffins, lead oxide, manganese oxide, iron oxide, liquid oxygen, oils, and moisture. .
Decomposition Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide.

Fire.
Autoignition, °C 449
Fire fighting Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Dust can be an explosion hazard when exposed to heat or flame. Flammable solid. Can be easily ignited and burns vigorously. Extinguishing media: For small fires, use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide or chemical foam.
Fire potential Slight risk when exposed to heat or flame. Carbon black can be ignited in the presence of open flames, and burns slowly with production of carbon monoxide.
Combustion products Toxic vapors and gases (e.g. carbon monoxide) may be released in a fire involving carbon black.

Health.
Exposure limit(s) OSHA PEL: TWA 3.5 mg/m3 NIOSH REL: TWA 3.5 mg/m3 Ca TWA 0.1 mg PAHs/m3 Carbon black in presence of PAHs. See Appendix A See Appendix C NIOSH IDLH: 1750 mg/m3

Exposure effects There are no human or animal reports suggesting a teratogenic potential for carbon black.
Ingestion Ingestion of large amounts may cause gastrointestinal irritation.
Inhalation Dust is irritating to the respiratory tract.
   Skin May cause skin irritation.
   Eyes Causes eye irritation.

First aid

Ingestion If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.
Inhalation Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Skin Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water.
Eyes Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
