Hazards and Protection.
Storage | Keep in well ventilated area. |
Handling | All chemicals should be considered hazardous. Avoid direct physical contact. Use appropriate, approved safety equipment. Untrained individuals should not handle this chemical or its container. Handling should occur in a chemical fume hood. |
Protection | Wear appropriate protective gloves, clothing and goggles. |
Respirators | Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). |
Small spills/leaks | Do not touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. Cover with plastic sheet to prevent spreading. Absorb or cover with dry earth, sand or other non-combustible material and transfer to containers. DO NOT GET WATER INSIDE CONTAINERS. |
Stability | Dehydrohalogenates in presence of alkali. |
Incompatibilities | Corrosive to iron and zinc chlordane will attack some forms of plastics, rubber, and coatings. Avoid contact with strong oxidizers, alkaline reagents |
Decomposition | Hazardous decomposition products: toxic gases and vapors, such as hydrogen chloride, chlorine, phosgene and carbon monoxide near its boiling point, chlordane decomposes to chlorine, phosgene and hydrogen chloride. |
Fire. | ||||
Flash Point,°C | 213 | |||
Fire fighting | Self-contained breathing apparatus, rubber gloves, hats, suits and boots must be worn. Highly toxic fumes are imminent. Dry chemical, foam, or carbon dioxide. Water may be ineffective on fire, but should be used to cool exposed containers. (Hcdb** 0001).
Fire potential | Non-Combustible
Combustion products | Irritating and toxic hydrogen chloride and phosgene gases may be formed when kerosene solution of compound burns. |

Exposure effects | Respiratory depression can occur. Fever and recurrent abnormally low blood pressure occurred in acute endrin poisoning. Endocrine system developmental abnormalities, biochemical and metabolic effects, complex effects on steroid metabolism, depressed cell-mediated immunity, and reduced fertility have been reported in experimental animals. It is transferred in breast milk. |
Ingestion | Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur following ingestion. Severe gastroenteritis occurred in one fatal ingestion of chlordane. |
Inhalation | Irritation, reduced gas exchange, and chemical pneumonitis may occur. |
Skin | Extensive contact may result in dermal irritation, especially when hydrocarbon solvents are present. |
Eyes | Hypersalivation, frothy nasal secretions, and headache may occur. Visual defects have been reported in a mixed ingestion of chlordane. |
First aid |
|
Ingestion | Seek medical assistance. |
Inhalation | Move victim to fresh air. Apply artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. |
Skin | Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. Remove material from skin immediately. Immediately flush with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. |
Eyes | Irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of tepid water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist, the patient should be seen in a health care facility. |
