Structure
Description Colorless liquid with a pungent, acrid, slightly nauseating, penetrating odor, like hot plastic, lachrymator.
Uses A major component of straight acrylic emulsion polymers used in latex paints, a major monomer used in straight acrylic emulsion for textile applications, incl backcoatings, fabric finishes, pigment binders, dirt release agents & thickeners. Used to make emulsion polymers for paper coating, as pulp additives in floor polishes & sealants, in shoe polishes, in base coatings & surface impregnation of leather in adhesives, sealants, caulking compound and binders.

Hazards and Protection.

Handling Ground and bond containers when transferring material. Use spark-proof tools and explosion proof equipment. Empty containers retain product residue, (liquid and/or vapor), and can be dangerous. Avoid contact with heat, sparks and flame. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose empty containers to heat, sparks or open flames.

Exposure effects May cause cancer in humans.
   Ingestion May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Ingestion of large amounts may cause CNS depression. May be harmful if swallowed.
   Inhalation May be harmful if inhaled. May cause irritation of the mucous membranes. Ethyl acrylate in humans is a strong skin, mucous membrane, eye, gastrointestinal, and respiratory tract irritant. Prolonged inhalation exposure to 50 to 75 ppm produced drowsiness, headache, and nausea.
   Skin Causes skin irritation. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material. May be harmful if absorbed through the skin. May cause photosensitization in certain individuals. May cause cyanosis of the extremities.
   Eyes May cause chemical conjunctivitis and corneal damage.

First aid
 
   Ingestion Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
   Inhalation Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
   Skin Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.
   Eyes Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.
