Hazards and Protection.
Storage | Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. |
WHMIS | B2 D1B E |
Handling | Empty containers retain product residue, (liquid and/or vapor), and can be dangerous. Avoid contact with heat, sparks and flame. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose empty containers to heat, sparks or open flames. |
Protection | Wear appropriate protective gloves, clothing and goggles. Always wear thermal protective clothing when handling refrigerated/cryogenic liquids. |
Respirators | A respiratory protection program that meets OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.134 and ANSI Z88.2 requirements or European Standard EN 149 must be followed whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator's use. Wear a NIOSH/MSHA or European Standard EN 149 approved full-facepiece airline respirator in the positive pressure mode with emergency escape provisions. |
Small spills/leaks | Absorb spill with inert material, (e.g., dry sand or earth), then place into a chemical waste container. Clean up spills immediately, using the appropriate protective equipment. For small spills, cover with sodium bisulfate and spray with water. |
Stability | Stable under normal temperatures and pressures. |
Incompatibilities | Strong oxidizing agents - strong acids - zinc - aluminum - copper, copper alloys. |
Decomposition | Nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, irritating and toxic fumes and gases, carbon dioxide, nitrogen. |

Fire fighting | Water or foam may cause frothing which can be violent and possibly endanger the life of the firefighter. Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus with a full facepiece operated in the positive pressure demand mode with appropriate turn-out gear and chemical resistant personal protective equipment. Use water in flooding quantities as fog. Solid streams of water may be ineffective. Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water. Apply water from as far a distance as possible. Use alcohol foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Use water spray to knock-down vapors.
Fire potential | Very flammable, combustion imminent.
Hazards | Vapor is heavier than air. May travel a considerable distance to a source of ignition and flash back.
Combustion products | Irritating and toxic oxides of nitrogen may be formed.

Exposure effects | |
Ingestion | Swallowing this material may be harmful or fatal. Symptoms may include severe stomach and intestinal irritation (nausea vomiting, diarrhea), abdominal pain, and vomiting of blood Swallowing this material may cause burns and destroy tissue in the mouth, throat, and digestive tract. Low blood pressure and shock may occur as a result of severe tissue injury. |
Inhalation | May cause asthmatic attacks due to allergic sensitization of the respiratory tract. May cause severe irritation of the respiratory tract with possible burns. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation. |
Skin | Can cause severe skin irritation. Symptoms may include redness and burning of skin, and other skin damage. Additional symptoms of skin contact may include: allergic skin reaction (delayed skin rash which may be followed by blistering, scaling and other skin effects) |
Eyes | Can cause severe eye irritation. Symptoms include stinging tearing, redness, and swelling of eyes. Can injure eye tissue Additional symptoms of eye exposure may include: blurred vision. |
First aid |
|
Ingestion | If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting. Allow the victim to rinse his mouth and then to drink 2-4 cupfuls of water, and seek medical advice. |
Inhalation | Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. |
Skin | Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. |
Eyes | First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. |
