Description Colorless to straw-colored, viscous, oily liquid with an odor variously described as aromatic, camphor- or menthol-like, or weak coconut oil.
Uses Solvent for cellulose esters & ethers for lacquers, component in soap-based spot removers, blending agent for special textile soaps & detergents, chemical intermediate for lubricating oil additives.

Exposure effects Headache, dizziness, giddiness, ataxia, sedation and coma may occur.
   Ingestion Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are common. Gastrointestinal hemorrhage can occur.
   Inhalation Inhalation causes pulmonary tract irritation and rarely pulmonary edema. Severe respiratory depression or death has not been reported after inhalation.
   Skin Dermatitis of varying severity may be noted. Drying and fissuring of the skin may be noted following chronic exposure.

First aid
 
   Ingestion Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Consider aspiration of gastric contents with a nasogastric tube after substantial recent (within 1 hour) ingestions. Activated charcoal: administer charcoal as a slurry (240 ml water/30 g charcoal). Usual dose: 25 to 100 g in adults/adolescents. Hypotension: infuse 10 to 20 ml/kg isotonic fluid, place in trendelenburg position. If hypotension persists, administer dopamine (5 to 20 mcg/kg/min) or norepinephrine (0.1 To 0.2 Mcg/kg/min), titrate to desired response.
   Inhalation Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with beta2 agonist and corticosteroid aerosols.
   Skin Remove contaminated clothing and wash exposed area thoroughly with soap and water. A physician should examine the area if irritation or pain persists.
   Eyes Irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of tepid water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist, the patient should be seen in a health care facility.
